What Makes the Wrangler JL Unique?

The Wrangler JL is unique due to the fact that it is a whole new generation, involving some significant changes for the 2018 model year. The all-new Wrangler JL actually looks very similar to the previous generation until you look at the details. The windshield rake is more extreme to help with aerodynamics, and the hood has lost some forward slope. The new model has more toning overall. You will also notice that the JL is unique in terms of its enlarged window openings, and the spare tire is further down, both of which improve visibility. The JL also grew about 2 inches in length on the two-door and 3.5 inches on the four-door version. It even has lightweight materials in the construction, and the interior has a more premium feel.

What Does “JL” Stand For?

The letters “JL” are not an abbreviation for anything. They are just the designation for this generation of the Jeep Wrangler, which is the fourth. The J does stand for Jeep and has been part of the name for each Jeep generation so far. The first generation was the YJ and lasted from 1986 to 1995. After that, the TJ generation went from 1996 to 2006. The third generation, JK, went from 2006 to 2017, leaving room for the JL to step in and take its place. Since the third generation was JK, JL does seem to be a logical next step in naming to keep things in alphabetical order.
